iPhone call recording, and the alternative without the announcement

To record a call on iPhone, you need iOS 18.1 or later. During the call, tap More, then Call Recording. Both people hear a notice that the call is being recorded, and it plays again during the call. The recording and transcript go to the Notes app. VoxNote gives you call notes with nothing played to the other person.

How to record a phone call on iPhone

  1. Open the Phone app and make or answer a call.
  2. Tap More, then Call Recording.
  3. Both people hear an audio notice that the call is being recorded.

Apple's call recording works when you're talking to one other person, and isn't available in some countries, including the European Union.

Why the announcement matters

Apple plays an audio notice to both people when recording starts, and repeats it during the call (Apple Support). Apple's guide lists no way to turn it off. For a client conversation, that notice changes the call: people get careful, shorten their answers, or ask why.
